UK’s first large ship-to-shore commercial connection installation in Stromness as part of a green power project.

MV Hamnavoe operated by NorthLink Ferries’ recent works by the SeaKing team. UK’s first large ship-to-shore commercial connection installation in Stromness as part of a green power project.

SeaKing were invited to the project because of our expertise on both marine and land projects; collaborating with Schneider electrics. The partnership was to ensure complete integration with both land and vessel-based systems.

Working with Schneider’s marine technical team, North Link Technical Manager and Technical Superintendent, the SeaKing Group are in the final phases of completing the installation of the MV Hamnavoe shore power installation, including automated control via the Kongsberg PMS (Power Management System).

The need for the installation – initiated out of the Cold ironing standard IEC 80005-3, low voltage shore requirements. A specification required to connect to shore power reducing emissions while the vessel is in port.

The MV Hamnavoe operates in the Orkneys on the route between Scrabster and Stromness, where the weather environment and heavy seas make installation works challenging while maintaining safety.

The project was installed in phases so as not to interfere with the ferry operations.

Ist Phase December 2018 -March 2019

Manufacture of the extension to the switchboard, a new shore power connection Panel both completed with full factory acceptance tests (FAT)

2nd Phase July 2019

Installation of onboard cable tray, penetrations and cabling. installation of the extension to the main switchboard and cables & containment from the engine control room (ECR) to six deck aft, where a new equipment house had been constructed by the vessel to contain the IP56 rated 415V shore power panel and auxiliary power supplies.

3rd Phase December 2019

Our personnel sailed with the vessel to Stromness during the day and commenced work while the vessel was in port overnight. Setting to work the manual operation aspect of the new ship installation works for preparation of possible use during the forthcoming dry-dock period.
